The Marietta Police Department currently employs one K-9 officer, Ptl. Glen McClelland, and his partners Grando and LuLu. K-9s Grando and LuLu are used to detect drugs inside of vehicles and also track missing people and suspects. These K-9s are highly trained and well cared for by their handler. When they are off duty they live with their handler and are part of the family.

The Marietta Police Department K-9s are trained to be “dual purpose” which means that they complete an intense 10-week training process. The first 4 weeks of training consists of teaching the K-9 the drug odors they will be searching for, and learning the beginning steps of tracking, article searches, and obedience.

The next phase of training is a 6-week class that the K-9 and its handler will complete. At the end of this class, the K-9 and handler will be tested on Narcotic searches with vehicles and buildings, area searches, article searches, building searches for suspects, tracking, suspect apprehension, and obedience. Once the testing phase is completed, the K-9 and handler will be OPOTA certified and also possess a national certification through the National Association of Professional Canine Handlers.

After passing all necessary tests, the K-9 and its handler are ready to hit the streets. But the training never stops. Now that they have completed their classes, the K-9 team will train one day a month to keep their skills sharp. Once every year the K-9 team is also required to re-certify for their OPOTA Certification and their national certification through NAPCH.
